Historic UN Resolution Calls for End to Israeli Occupation of Palestinian Territories

A significant resolution has been passed in the United Nations General Assembly calling for the end of Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. The proposal sets a 12-month deadline for this occupation to cease and mentions potential sanctions if the deadline is not met.

While the resolution lacks legal binding authority, it is based on advisory opinions from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which declared the Israeli occupation illegal since 1967.

In the vote, 124 countries supported the resolution, 14 opposed it, and 43 abstained. Palestinian representatives hailed the resolution as historic, while Israel criticized it as inciting violence and promoting hatred.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman stated that Saudi Arabia will not establish relations with Israel without the establishment of a Palestinian state, posing a significant challenge to U.S. efforts.

This resolution comes ahead of the UN's annual session, where world leaders will participate. It is the first such proposal introduced since Palestine gained new rights within the UN in 2023.
