Google has signed an agreement with Kairos Power to deploy small nuclear reactors for its AI data centers. These reactors will use molten fluoride salt as a coolant and are expected to be operational by the end of the decade, supporting Google’s efforts to decarbonize its energy consumption. This move is part of the tech industry’s shift toward sustainable energy as data centers consume increasing amounts of power to support AI operations. Global energy demands for such centers are expected to double by 2030, pushing companies toward greener alternatives.
The deal is subject to regulatory approval by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the project is a key step in demonstrating the viability of advanced nuclear energy for industrial use. Tech firms, including Amazon and Microsoft, are also exploring nuclear energy solutions for their facilities to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and enhance energy security.
